About Shop The Neighbourhood

The first Shop The Neighbourhood took place on November 30th, 2013, in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Shop The Neighbourhood is an initiative to encourage local shopping and support for small businesses. Taking place during the busiest shopping season of the year, the promotion raises awareness of the large-scale push from retailers both online and across the border which moves dollars away from the small businesses, directly impacting on the health of our communities.

This year, the program expanded across Canada and included 5 major Cities – Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver – Within that group, 200 plus Business Associations participated, with over 6,000 individual businesses registering to take part, loading over 8,000 unique deals.

As part of the program, Business Improvement Areas (BIA’s) were offered one of three beautification prizes in the greater regions of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Calgary.
